The Village of Tunis, nestled in the Fayoum Oasis in Egypt: An Artistic and Cultural Center
In the heart of the Fayoum oasis, the village of Tunis is a place where art and tradition meet. Pottery has held an essential place there for millennia.
30 years ago, Evelyne Porret, a Swiss potter, founded a school to pass on her know-how to the village youth, thus reviving an ancestral art. Today, her students have opened workshops and teach in turn. Although the school remains a central element, many independent workshops exist in Tunis, each creating unique pieces. The potters produce works that combine tradition and innovation, appreciated both locally and internationally by collectors.
Each creation is the result of ancestral know-how enriched by the creativity of the artisans, telling the story of the village, the beauty of the flora and fauna, and conveying a simple and authentic joy of living. All pieces are produced artisanally, in earthenware, hand-painted and glazed.
The workshop of the two brothers Seleem and Abdel Sattar holds a special place, attracting an international clientele. The artisans create works that combine ancestral know-how and innovation. Their creations are now appreciated by connoisseurs. We have fallen in love with this workshop, which offers ceramics that transcend eras and cultures.
